National Minimum Wage Case Increase

As a result of the National Minimum Wage Case Decision, the Fair Work Commission has increased the national minimum wage by 3.3%. This decision is effective from the first full pay period commencing on or after the 1st July 2017.  This decision affects the National Minimum Wage and the minimum wages prescribed in the Modern Awards.  The minimum wage will increase to $18.29 per hour or $694.90 per week, based on a 38-hour week. The decision may also affect current enterprise agreements.

Employers who are currently paying employees above the minimum award wage may absorb the 3.3% increase and not pass on the increase.  We recommend where an increase is passed on this is confirmed in writing to the employee.

Employer in the process of negotiating an enterprise agreement should consider the 3.3% increase otherwise the agreement may not pass the Better off Overall Test.
